Thank you for this, Kim. I can relate to so much of what you've written here! I started writing on Substack in Feb. I definitely had that same 'newness' rush that you describe. This has now waned and I'm finding it tougher to show up and I'm feeling 'dry' of ideas.
However, I feel I'm getting a lot out of the accountability/ structure of showing up every week and actually 'finishing' something - even if it's flawed, imperfect and not ready to share. (Because I have not yet had that feeling with my long novel project). I've given myself a lot of leeway here in that I can post anything. Even a photo and caption. As long as it's every Sunday. So far I've done it for about three months or so. I'm proud of that!
But YES. The performance element is an interesting one. I'm definitely starting to feel that. I've found myself starting to think about how I can turn experiences into Substack posts. Hmm. Something I want to get curious about.
Anyway, thank you for your generosity and honesty here. Follow your intuition and I look forward to hearing how you get on with your writing, for you. x
I love the permission you are giving yourself, Janelle, to show up imperfectly. I love the idea of the simplicity of it sometimes simply being a photo and caption! The structure to finish something - I love that too. I’m going to sit with that idea for myself, thank you for sharing.
I totally relate on the considering life happenings and how they can become posts. This is what happened to me with Instagram and definitely had me curious.
Oh, I’m with you. Fall is like a big sigh of relief after a summer of action! Summer is not my favorite.
I hear you on longing for September a bit!
Love this. Inspiring that you’re giving yourself exactly what you need, and listening to your inner knowing.
I’m glad it’s inspiring! It feels so uncomfortable 🥴
I totally get it. I wrote a few Substacks, but haven't in months. We have to be gentle with ourselves!
Gentle, yes. I’m a big fan of that word!
